What reformulating to natural colors costs, and how long it takes

Last checked: October 31, 2026

By OTHER Natural Flavors, a service of Xponent21 Inc

The published numbers on ingredient cost, use levels, per-SKU cost and timelines, in one place. Each figure has a source and a confidence rating. Ratings go up as we add sources and anonymized data from OTHER briefs.

The short answer

  • Budget for a higher ingredient price and a higher use level at the same time. The two multiply.
  • Plan 6 months to 2 years per SKU for supplier qualification and shelf-life work. Simple beverages can move faster.
  • Red 3 has a hard federal date: January 15, 2027 for food. Start with any SKU that uses it.
  • Ask suppliers for cost-in-use at your shade and use level, not price per pound.
