The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has finalized the revocation of the listing for Orange B, effective September 8, 2026, according to the Federal Register, and has proposed revoking the listing for Citrus Red No. 2.
Current regulatory status
Orange B has had its authorization revoked, ending its legal use in food. In contrast, Citrus Red No. 2 is subject to a proposed revocation, which is distinct from a finalized regulatory action. Neither color additive belongs to the voluntary phase-out covering six petroleum-based synthetic dyes that FDA targets for elimination by the end of 2027.
Historical food applications
Both certified color additives were historically restricted to narrow niches. Federal regulations limited Orange B strictly to the casings or surfaces of frankfurters and sausages. Regulators permitted Citrus Red No. 2 solely for coloring the skins of mature oranges that were not intended or used for processing.
What food brands and QA teams should do now
Quality assurance teams should review supply chains to confirm no sausage casings or imported meat components contain Orange B. For processors assessing Citrus Red No. 2, transitioning to natural colors exempt from certification requires bench trials to evaluate pH, heat stability, and shelf life rather than assuming direct performance parity. OTHER Natural Flavors does not manufacture, sell or own any color or flavor supplier.
